Inspired to Understand How a Rainbow is Created

A class project by the inventor of the Create & Learn Stands, Norma Flores.

Inspired by “The Rainbow Fish” by Marcus Pfister.

About the Project

  • Students created their favorite color of the rainbow using paper plates to make a fish and wrote the title on top and a sentence to showcase.
  • This Science Project was connected not only to Science, but also focused on all areas of academics; Math, Social Studies, and Language Arts.
  • There are million ways you can use the stand.  For example:  to teach, train or if you just love creating like me.

This Project's
Thematic Unit

A Thematic unit is the organization of a curriculum around a central theme. In other words, it’s a series of lessons that integrate subjects across the curriculum, such as math, reading, social studies, science, language arts, etc. that all tie into the main theme of the unit. Each activity should have a main focus toward the thematic idea.

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister is a sweet story with an important life lesson. It is a perfect choice for the start of the school year or any time your students could use a reminder about the importance of sharing and treating others with kindness.

In my theme the book was the central focus.

The title for the science project came from Bloom’s Taxonomy and it’s what teachers use to align their lessons and activities.

Connecting All Subjects

When teaching in theme the teacher will be able to teach using the same activity in all subjects. This allow the children to make connections, and this is one of many ways that the brain learns. In the fish book project that I used I connected it to math, science, language arts, and social studies.

Math: colors, shapes, counting, patterns

Science: fish habitat, rainbow

Language Arts: Letter of the week: Ff for fish

Social Studies: Sharing, kindness, choices
